Nairobi Police boss Adamson Bungei on Wednesday, March 8, disputed allegations that the heightened security on roads leading to State House in Nairobi and Kisumu was due to the lapse of the 14-day ultimatum issued by Azimio leader Raila Odinga.

While speaking to the media, Bungei noted that the enhanced security patrol was normal police procedure and not a move to counter Raila's mass action plan.

He added that police officers were deployed to ensure Kenyans are safe as they went about their business.

Security officers mounted roadblocks on several routes leading to State House Road in Nairobi as well as those heading to state lodges across the country.

In Nairobi, roads leading to State House were cordoned off by the heavy presence of police officers. These included State House Road,  State House Avenue and Processional Way as well as some parts of Dennis Pritt.

In addition, a team of security guards was also stationed at State House Gate C, which is reportedly left unguarded on most occasions.

In Kisumu, police cordoned off the road leading to Jomo Kenyatta highway for the better part of Wednesday morning until late at night.

This prompted motorists to use alternative routes as only those who resided in the neighbouring areas were granted access after a thorough search and scrutiny.

The roadblocks coincided with an announcement from Opposition Leader Raila Odinga whose 14-day ultimatum to the ruling regime expired on Wednesday at midnight.

The Azimio leader had issued an ultimatum to the government to cushion Kenyans from the high cost of living experienced in the country.

"We want you to wait for the time. The deadline is on Wednesday at midnight, so you will hear from us on Thursday," Raila remarked outside Parliament buildings on March 8, 2023.
