The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) on Tuesday, March 14, listed 82 businesses whose owners were required to pay a mandatory monthly standard levy.
In the notice published by the agency, carpentry and tailoring were among the businesses included in the list of manufacturers affected by the notice.
KEBS indicated that the businesses were required to pay 0.2 per cent of the monthly turnover with a minimum of Ksh1,000 monthly and Ksh400,000 per year.
Other businesses considered as manufacturers included building and civil engineering, electrical communication, painting renovation, plumbing and waterproofing, sewers and drainage construction, steelworks and fabrications, steel plants, steam boilers and gas installation, lift installation and elevators.
"The amount is payable through KRA - iTax system (Standards Levy Account) on or before 20th day of the succeeding month," read the statement in part.
Terrazzo works, partitioning and suspended ceilings installation, quarry ballast, concrete blocks, non-metallic mineral products, roofing contracts, road construction, landscaping and excavation, fire systems, installation and commission were also included in the list.
"Glazing, electronic communication/installation, electrical contractors, mining of semi-precious stones, woodwork (carving, furniture and fixtures), irrigation engineering, drilling /borehole contractors, excavators & backfilling contractors and saw millers are also manufacturers," added the statement in part.
Under the textile category, dry cleaning, weaving, dyeing, tanneries, sisal processing, hides and skins processors, curtain material processors, leather processing, and footwear manufacturers were included.
Electrical Engineering
Entrepreneurs in ventures such as computer engineering installation, repair and maintenance, data processing, software development, networking, power generation, telephone equipment wiring, installation and maintenance were also urged to adhere to the payments.
Electrical rewinding, cinematography, colour separation and processing i.e studios, advertising and sales promotion material design and production, alarm installation and electric fencing, air conditioning, refrigeration and ventilation were also added.
Mechanical Engineering
In the mechanical engineering sector, KEBS indicated that entrepreneurs taking part in panel beating, spray painting, car repairs, metal works, transport operators, motorcycle and bicycle assemblers, bodybuilders, and spare parts manufacturers will also be required to pay the standardisation levy.
Food and Manufacturing
The businesses listed in this category were; alcoholic drinks processing, pre-packaged foods, fresh produce, horticulture and flower firms, butcheries, dairy Industry, animal fees, bakeries, confectioners and food compounded and posho mills.
Chemicals
Printing and publishing, pulp, paper and paper board processors, petroleum, gas and coal products, paint manufacturers, photocopying, photographic studios, water treatment and filtration works, agricultural chemicals, fertilizers packers and processors were also added to the list.
