With the Kenyan tourism sector still recovering from the pandemic and economic shocks, Travellers Worldwide’s (2023) report further spelt doom for the sector.
While ranking the best Safaris in Africa, the report noted that wealthy tourists were ditching Kenya for a better experience in Tanzania.
It further revealed that only one Kenyan national park made it to the top 19 parks across the continent while Tanzania had a record 4 featuring on the list.
According to the report, tourists coming to the two East African Countries spend between Ksh19,000 and Ksh194,000 per day depending on their preferences.
Averagely, tourists spend between Ksh32,300 and Ksh45,300 in a day when visiting national parks and game reserves in Kenya and Tanzania.
Kenya was described as the most preferred spot for tourists who wanted to spend Ksh32,300 and less.
“Kenya is a more popular and affordable safari destination, although both countries offer a great safari experience,” the report explained why tourists seeking to spend less were flocking to Kenya.
However, Travellers Worldwide reported that Kenya, in the long run, was losing revenue since wealthy tourists preferred Tanzania.
“There are a lot of luxury safaris in Tanzania for tourists who prefer a vacation that feels more glamorous,” the report also indicated why Tanzania was the spot of choice by world millionaires.
Four national parks from Tanzania were ranked in the top 19 parks in the continent with Serengeti National Park ranked the best in Africa.
Other parks in Tanzania ranked included; Ruaha National Park (15), Nyerere National Park (17) and Katavi National Park (18).
Despite having 51 national parks and game reserves, only Masai Mara Game Reserve appeared in the top 19 - landing at the eighth slot.
Laikipia Plateau was also featured in a separate list among top five safari spots in Africa.
