Motorists on Thursday, March 16, were stuck along the Gilgil-Nyahururu highway after a long-distance trailer got stuck at an underpass at the Pembroke House flyover.

Reports detailed that the trailer failed to pass through the flyover after the driver miscalculated the bridge's height.

"Traffic officers are yet to arrive," eyewitnesses stated, adding that motorists were irked by the slowness of emergency service providers.

The underpass connecting Gilgil and Nyahururu towns was built to accommodate medium-sized trucks and not large trailers.

However, the large trailer was oblivious to the danger as the driver attempted to cross through the underpass.

It was reported that the 24-wheeler was being driven from Gigil to Nyahuru when he got stuck.  The trailer driver further tried to manoeuvre his way out, damaging the trailer.

In Kenya, signposts near an overpass indicate the maximum height of a bridge. Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) also paints the height on the bridges to alert drivers.

Traffic snarl-up was witnessed on both sides of the road as the trailer driver waited to be rescued.

Gilgil - Nyahururu highway is a C77 road that served motorists, especially those travelling from Central to Northern Kenya.

The distance between Gilgil and Nyahururu is around 68 kilometres, and it takes around one hour to move to and from either town.

Traffic police officers advised motorists to consider alternative routes, including the Nyahururu - Nakuru highway, which passes through Nakuru City.
