Motorists plying Thika Road were on Tuesday, March 7, caught up in a traffic snarl-up following an accident involving a bus and a 14-seater matatu.

The bus crashed into the 14-seater matatu at around Muthaiga Police station, whose officers immediately rushed to the scene to secure and save the victims.

It was reported that the bus and 14-seater matatu were headed to Githurai 45 estate when the accident happened.

It was not clear what caused the accident, but the two vehicles seemed to have crossed each other's lanes while on a high speed.

The busy road was almost closed as traffic officers and officials from the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) moved to restore normalcy.

Police officers who were on the road also cordoned off a section of the road, interrupting traffic flow.

The traffic police officers advised other motorists to use alternative routes instead of waiting for the clearance of the wreckage that partially blocked the road.

Ambulances from nearby hospitals arrived at the scene to offer emergency medical services and transportation of the injured persons for specialised treatment.

However, it was not immediately established if the accident had claimed any lives as the vehicles were left mangled.

In February 2023, NTSA announced that the death toll from road accidents had already hit double digits.

In 2022, NTSA reported that 3,541 accident victims, 22 per cent died, 7,236 were seriously injured, and 5,147 were slightly injured.

The authority noted that some 1,269 pedestrians died while more than 900 were motorcyclists, passengers were 634, drivers (324), pillion passengers (324), and pedal cyclists (49).
