Motorists plying Thika Road were on Monday, January 16, caught up in a traffic snarl-up following an accident involving two PSVs near General Service Unit (GSU) area.
Images seen by Kenyans.co.ke show a 63-seater bus headed to Nairobi overturned on the oncoming lane. The bus had taken down a section of the guard rail separating the two roads.
A 33-seater mini-bus was crushed on the front, indicating a possible head-on collision before the bus overturned. Two lanes were blocked by the overturned bus.
Traffic officers and officials from the Kenya National Highway Authority (KeNHA) arrived and cordoned the area causing an interruption in traffic flow on both sides of the road.
By the time of publishing this article, a rescue mission to pull out passengers from the overturned bus was underway with no casualties having been reported.
Motorists who attempted to evade the pile-up using the service lanes were also held up. Those heading to town were advised to use alternative routes.
Vehicles can exit the super highway at the Allsops interchange, join the Outer Ring road, connect with Juja Road at Kariobangi roundabout and head to town.
A second option is to exit the Kenya School of Monetary Studies drive through Mathare estate and join Juja Road to town.
In a separate incident on Monday, a church bus heading to town overturned along Waiyaki Way just before the Nairobi expressway entrance.
Passengers in the mini-bus escaped from the bus with unconfirmed reports indicating that they had arrived in the city from a funeral
The accident at Allsops is the second to happen this year on the busy highway. On January 8, a private matatu knocked down a motorist at the section.
Meanwhile, the death toll in road accidents in 2023 has already hit double digits after five people died in a carnage involving a matatu and a tractor along the Webuye-Eldoret highway.
