Kenyans on social media on Friday, March 17, shared their views and experience over tying fuel pipes to restrict fuel consumption in engines.

On the popular road alert platform, Sikika Road Safety, motorists made various claims, including the benefits and disadvantages of restricting the flow of fuel into the engine.

Some of the people who commented claimed that their engine fuel consumption was significantly lowered when they tied pipes.

On the other hand, other motorists claimed that the restriction causes substantial damage to car engines. It also affects the speed performance of the cars.

Basic fuel system diagnosis by experts shows that fuel restriction will lead to serious damage to the engine.

According to Mechanical Engineer Peter Fable, the system's fuel volume and flow must be relational to the desired output.

The engine cylinders need a specific amount of fuel to give maximum power output that can drive a vehicle.

"The entire fuel system and each of its components exist to provide proper injector flow rate through the injector nozzles and into the engine's cylinders," Fable explained.

Motorists are advised to consider components, fuel system design, pressure, and flow system as well as diagnostic techniques before risking the engine by restricting fuel to the combustion chambers.

"It is possible that restricting air intake could reduce fuel consumption in an internal combustion engine, as it would reduce the amount of fuel being taken in and combusted," Fable explained.

However, he noted that such an action would likely reduce the engine's power output and efficiency.

Restricting fuel flow may also lead to engine overheating unnecessarily and seals burning out, hence, resulting in leakages.

"It is important to note that this would not be a safe or recommended modification to make to a vehicle.

"It is always best to consult with a certified mechanic before making any modifications to your vehicle," Fable added.
