A section of Azimio leaders who led protesters to the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on Monday, March 20 was arrested by police officers.

The Leader of the Minority in the Senate Stewart Madzayo was the first to be picked up by five police officers in full riot gear outside KICC.

Senator Madzayo was led into a waiting police vehicle and was ferried to the Central Police Station as officers lobbed teargas canisters to disperse supporters who attempted to block the vehicle.

Photos of the Kilifi Senator in custody at the station revealed that Malindi Member of Parliament Amina Mnyazi and Kilifi South Counterpart Ken Chonga were also nabbed by cops.

Moments after, the leader of the Minority in Parliament and Unguja MP Opiyo Wandayi was taken in.

In Nakuru, the ODM regional Chair Benard Miruka, and former Nakuru County Assembly Speaker Joel Kairu were nabbed for leading the picketing exercise in the city.

Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna disclosed how he narrowly evaded an attempted arrest by police officers, but at a small cost.

"You will notice that I'm wearing a different shirt because they tried to arrest me personally. They tried to strangle me in the streets and he went away with my blue t-shirt, I want it back," Sifuna stated.

During a press address in Parliament buildings, Embakasi East legislator Babu Owino claimed that Wandayi was ferried to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters.

"I want to condemn the arbitrary arrest of our leaders. Wandayi is currently in Kiambu, and we do not know what the police want to do with him," the MP stated.

The MPs further claimed that the government had withdrawn security for Azimio-affiliated lawmakers in line with the mass action.

Police officers are in the process of restoring normalcy in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD).
