Unknown people invaded the Northlands City owned by the Kenyatta family on Monday, March 27, and stole over 1,400 Dorper sheep according to the farm manager.
The intruders were seen on the busy road carrying the livestock on their shoulders while others loaded them in vehicles.
Some of the attackers seized the opportunity to make quick cash by selling the sheep for as little as Ksh1,000 to passersby.
However, the sheep are valued at approximately Ksh 50,000 depending on the breed. Dorper rams are considerably more expensive than the ewes.
The Dorper is a hardy South African composite breed, it is a cross between the Black-headed Persian ewes and the Dorset Horn rams.
Interestingly, the name comes from the combination of the syllables from the parent breeds- Dorset and Persian.
According to farmers, they require little input and yield high returns. Also, the sheep are hardy and adapt quickly to the environment, and are non-selective grazers.
It is also ideal for mutton production resulting in high exports due to the low-fat scores.
Importantly, Dorper sheep are known for gaining weight at an impressive rate with some weighing 36 kilograms by the time they are four months old.
The invasion of the Ksh50 billion Kenyatta property was frowned upon by Kenyans and the opposition who questioned the role of the police in protecting both private and public property.
Besides stealing the sheep, the invaders cut down and burned hundreds of eucalyptus trees and erected structures in sections of the multi-billion property.
Following the invasion, former President Uhuru Kenyatta was yet to issue a statement by the time of publishing this article.
