A police boss from Migori County was on Monday night, April 3, beaten up by an irate mob that was pursuing a suspect accused of stealing motorbikes.

In a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Tuesday, April 4, the OCS was on a mission to rescue the suspect who had sought cover in the delivery room at the Mother and Child Hospital in Migori.

The OCS was part of 15 officers deployed from Kehancha Police Station to rescue the victim as the irate mob grew angrier.

According to DCI, the mob had threatened to burn the hospital down to smoke the suspect out as the hospital administration was hesitant to release the suspect.

"The OCS Kehancha Police Station suffered injuries on his left ankle as he led his men in the delicate rescue mission, while the police vehicle returned to the station minus its windscreen and with several dents.

"The hospital’s ambulance was also extensively damaged and several windowpanes in the hospital’s main building smashed," the DCI statement read in part.

However, the suspect was rescued through the hospital's roof and placed in the police vehicle which then left for the police station.

Evidently enranged by the act, the mob began pelting stones at the suspect and police vehicle in a bid to stop them from driving off.

The defiance by the mob forced the police to use teargas to disperse the crowd and regain order.

Luckily, the officer received treatment at the local hospital and was discharged. Additionally, none of the hospital staff was injured in the 15-minute confrontation.

"The suspect is currently in custody being processed for arraignment," DCI concluded.

However, none of the residents involved in the confrontation were arrested.
