The main suspect in the murder of Kenyatta Unversity student June Jerop on Tuesday, April 11 told the High Court that the deceased owed him Ksh1 million.

The suspect, who was first believed to be the boyfriend and accused of inviting her for a coffee date on March 18, claimed that he never met her.

He also refuted the alleged relationship between him and the deceased and stated that she was only her business partner.

In his affidavit, he wrote that the deceased bought a car from him but still owed him Ksh1 million.

Jerop had also allegedly asked the suspect to put the car lease in his name to avoid scrutiny from National Industrial Training Authority (Nita) where she worked as an accountant.

According to the suspect, Jerop did not want her friends to know that she had bought a car and often avoided queries about her lifestyle from her colleagues.

He further detailed that the deceased would use his company located in Bungoma County to apply for tenders at NITA.

To prove his innocence, the suspect claimed that the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions and the Inspector General of Police had verified his claims.

"At the time of her passing, she still owed me Ksh 1 million which she was still paying. As such the motor vehicle was still in my name.

"She asked me to have the lease put in my name so that she could escape any interrogation at work since she earned Ksh48,000 and her rent was Ksh30,000," he explained.

Furthermore, the suspect accused Jerop's sister of interfering and taking his personal possessions including a Wi-Fi router when the police went to his house.

"She was allowed to ask me questions relating to the deceased while she is not an officer. She also took video footage of my whole house in the presence of the officers who did not stop her," he lamented.

His lawyer argued that the suspect only learned of Jerop's death after officers came looking for him maintaining that prior to her death, the deceased attempted to contact the suspect twice but he did not answer.

"The officers have not managed to produce any shred of evidence that connects my client to the deceased. He told the officer he was in Bungoma for business," the lawyer stated.

Furthermore, the lawyer emphasised that no evidence was presented to implicate his client including CCTV footage that did not show the suspect with the deceased at her residence.

Jerop went missing on March 19 only for her to be founded dead by the roadside in Nairobi days later.

The case is still ongoing in court.
