Two individuals including a teacher and a watchman fled on Wednesday, April 12 after orders from the Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu to arrest them following brutal student punishment

The two were among a group of five that caused a 19-year-old student to lose his testicle in Kisii County after brutal punishment

"This is so disturbing and criminal. It is no longer an educational matter, it is a criminal matter, if a teacher goes to that extent, then he is a criminal and he is no longer a teacher," the CS stated.

Machogu was categorical that the teachers shall be treated as criminals and be prosecuted in court for the damages caused to the boy.

"The law should take its course and they should be punished accordingly. They should be taken to court and dismissed from service," the CS added.

In liaison with the Kisii County Police Commander Charles Kases, three more suspects involved in the incident were arrested and will be arraigned in court on Thursday, April 13.

"The three teachers we arrested were all employed by the board," the police boss stated.

Meanwhile, Machogu noted that the ministry will follow Article 29 of the Constitution which prohibits corporal punishment, torture, or cruel punishment.

While at the hospital, the victim narrated the tragic ordeal adding that the teachers ganged up on him and would not stop hitting him even after he started bleeding.

He was rushed to the hospital where doctors recommended that one of his testicles be removed.

"They took me to the staff room, tossed me to the ground several times before they tied me up and started beating me for about two hours," he narrated.

Cases of corporal punishment in Kisii and Nyamira counties have recently been reported with parents and other stakeholders condemning the incidences.

Another incident was reported in Nyamira County where a class eight pupil also lost his testicle after being brutally beaten by the teachers.

"A teacher should not inflict serious injuries that the students will never forget especially permanently affecting their manhood," Machogu concluded.
