14 passengers were left nursing serious injuries after their matatu rolled severally along Mwea- Embu Highway on Saturday, April 15.

The public service vehicle (PSV) rolled several times before landing in a ditch at Kagio junction on the Mwea - Embu highway in Kirinyaga County.

According to eyewitnesses, the matatu lost control before it hit a tuk-tuk and veered off the road.

"The matatu was heading to Nairobi before it hit a tuktuk from behind and then rolled severally, landing into a ditch near rice farm here at Kagio Junction," one of the eyewitnesses stated.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals in Mutithi, where first aid was administered before admission.

Law enforcement officers from Sagana Police Station were deployed at the scene and helped restore traffic flow on the highway.

Police pulled the matatu off the ditch and carted away the wreckage to clear the accident scene.

Following the accident, residents implored the Ministry of Transport, led by Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, to erect speed bumps along the area.

The speed bumps, they argued, would help motorists slow down while approaching the busy junction.

"We ask the government to erect speed bumps in this area. If we had them, this accident would have been avoided," a resident stated.

The accident happened days after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) launched a nationwide operation to sensitise and target motorists flouting traffic rules.

This was after the agency established that 3,358 people died on Kenyan roads between January 1 and September 13, 2022.

In their report, Sunday was listed among the deadliest days, with many crashing occurring during the day.
