Police on Tuesday, April 18, rescued a 4-day-old baby girl from a pit latrine near Rioma Catholic Church in Kisii County.

OCS and officers from Rioma Police Station responded after a resident reported that a baby was crying at the pit latrine, within the Rioma Catholic Church compound.

The baby was thrown into the latrine by an unknown person, an act that compelled the police to launch investigations with the aim of apprehending the suspects involved in the incident.

They later took the baby to Marani Level 4 Hospital and handed her over to the Sub-County Chief Nursing Officer in good health.

Members of the public with the help of police officers safely demolished the latrine without injuring the infant.

“In the best interest of the child, National Police Service through its specialized Child Protection Units is committed to the protection of children in Kenya,” read part of the police report.

The OCS lauded members of the public for sharing information that led to the timely rescue of the baby.

"I want to appreciate area residents for cooperating with officers and reporting information that is in the best interest of citizens and the community," stated the OCS.

In March, 2023, a one-day-old baby was rescued from a pit latrine at Kamuiru village in Kirinyaga Central.

The owner of the latrine alerted the police and the fire brigade after hearing a baby cry from the latrine.

Kirinyaga County fire brigade boss John Kiama stated that the child was rescued and taken to Kerugoya Hospital for medical attention.

Another similar incident was reported in December 2022,  when Ngong residents were shocked after guards identified a little baby girl dumped under a Mugumo tree

A guard manning a nearby church heard a baby's cry in the night and on trying to locate where the cries came from, he identified the bay under the tree.
