The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Monday, April 24, suspended Public Service Vehicles (PSVs) from expanding their bases of operation in Nairobi and its environs.

According to the Authority, the move would address traffic congestion across the county and curb increased road accidents and other road-related issues.

"To address traffic congestion concerns, the Authority hereby halts PSV route extensions and variations in the Nairobi and environs until an assessment of facilities available is conducted," read part of the statement.

The announcement came a few days after several Saccos rejected the expansion of the popular Super Metro Sacco that recently expanded to Kahawa West.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke on Tuesday, April 25, Super Metro CEO Nelson Mwangi argued that the move will limit Saccos from growing and deny passengers freedom of choice.

"It will equally condone cases of indiscipline and ownership of some routes cartels," the CEO stated.

On Tuesday, April 17, members of other Saccos staged protests from Roysambu to Kahawa West to counter the expansion.

They argued that Super Metro was invading their space and may eventually drive them out of business.

Super Metro was also on the receiving end of criticism for reportedly taking over pick-up stages in the Central Business District (CBD), forcing buses and matatus to block the roads.

On their part, Super Metro argued that the other Saccos were afraid of competition, arguing that they had the necessary documents to operate.

"Kindly note that we have more than 100 new fleets that we shall distribute in all our different routes.

"Our main aim is to serve you esteemed clients better and better," read part of a statement from Super Metro.

Meanwhile, NTSA, on Monday, April 24, sent its Director General(DG) George Njao on 30 days of compulsory leave following increased road carnages across the country.

The authority also withdrew the licenses of Taita Taveta Sacco, Tahmeed Sacco, Team Swat Logistics and Management Limited, and Kyoga Hauliers Kenya Limited.
