ICT Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo on Tuesday, April 25, donated Ksh800,000 to Gor Mahia Football Club.
According to the CS, Ksh725,000 of the total funds was meant for offsetting winning bonuses arrears while the remaining amount will be paid to the club's security team.
Speaking in Nairobi when he hosted Gor Mahia FC, Owalo urged more corporates to support Kenyan football.
The CS further explained that most community football clubs in the country needed support from the private sector.
“I watched the game Gor played against Kenya Police over the weekend and I was impressed with the team’s performance,” Owalo stated.
He emphasized that the government is doing its best in supporting the sector but more partners were needed as a way of sustaining and growing football in the country.
The club's Chairman Ambrose Rachier, who was in attendance, explained that Gor Mahia was struggling financially due to pay disputes with former players.
“We have been forced to pay millions of shillings in fines and interests. I request the players to embrace other dispute resolution mechanisms with the club,” he narrated.
Rachier also requested the CS to assist in fast-tracking the process of ensuring the club acquires a title deed for a piece of land donated to them by former President Daniel Moi in Kasarani, Nairobi.
Popularly known as K’Ogalo, Gor Mahia was considered the most successful football club in Kenya, with a record 19 league titles.
Earlier, club Coach Jonathan McKinstry challenged the club’s officials to come up with mechanisms for a self-sustainable football club.
Gor leads the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League title with 56 points from 26 matches, two points ahead of rivals Tusker.
