Githunguri Member of Parliament (MP), Gathoni Wa Muchomba, on Wednesday, April 26, disagreed with the decision to arrest a woman accused of killing her two-year-old daughter in Kitengela.

According to the MP who spoke during an interview, the lady should have been taken to a mental facility for examination.

"It is sad and sickening that this girl who just killed her child and ate up her body parts in Kitengela. Instead of taking her for medication and health care intervention, we are actually locking her up in a cell. Are we doing justice to her and other cases as such," she stated.

She further accused the police and other security personnel of focusing more on guns, prison, and the confines of jail and forgetting about the social aspect of life.

"There are so many ills happening in the society and we do not have the right channels to deal with the issues," the MP explained.

The MP detailed that it was not an issue for leaders to solve, but a problem for everyone.

"As a leader, it is my duty to air out such issues, the social aspect is missing and this needs to be addressed," she added.

Furthermore, she reiterated that since the National taskforce on Health recommended that mental health issues should be declared as a national disaster, nothing had been done.

"Despite announcing mental health issues a national disaster, there is still a gap. We lack funds, and fail to implement the law," she added.

Wamuchomba stated that she once spent Ksh2 million to rehabilitate a woman with mental health issues. The patient took about four years to recover at a public facility.

Meanwhile, the accused lady blamed the heinous act on low self-esteem and relationship wrangles with her boyfriend.

The 24-year-old lady was recorded on Sunday, April 23, butchering her daughter while neighbours watched helplessly.

Police arrested and detained her at Kitengela Police Station. The court further allowed the detectives to hold her for 10 days as investigations continued.
