Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja appointed former Health Chief Administrative Secretary (CAS) Dr Mercy Mwangangi to serve as the chairperson of the board of directors of Pumwani Hospital.
In a gazette notice published on April 28, 2023, the Governor appointed five more people to the board to serve alongside the former CAS.
According to the notice, Mwangangi will serve in the position for a period of three years.
Others appointed to the board included Evalyne Ikwii Omasaja, Saidi Motokaa, Ali Joram Juma Mkwambaa, Zahra Mohammed, and Hassan Ali Amin.
Mwangangi's new role is a promotion from her former position as part of a six-member special task force that reviewed the health sector in Nairobi City.
Sakaja had on September 15, 2022, appointed the former CAS to the position alongside Olive Mugenda.
"The taskforce shall prepare and submit its report to the Governor of Nairobi City County Government together with its recommendations within Forty-Five (45) days from the date of its appointment.
"The Office of the Governor shall constitute the secretariat of the Taskforce," read a notice from Sakaja at the time.
Mwangangi is famous for her outspoken role as the CAS in the health docket during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In the same gazette notice, Government Chief Pathologist Johansen Oduor was appointed as the chairperson of the Nairobi Funeral Home formerly known as City Mortuary.
Recently, Sakaja upgraded the City Mortuary to contain a private wing to cater to wealthy clients.
Other city-based health facilities that got new boards include Mbagathi Hospital. The board will be chaired by Gitahi Githinji who is the CEO of Amref Health Africa.
Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital's board will be led by Dorcas Kemunto, Mutuini Hospital's board will be led by Isaiah Tanui, and the board of Pumwani Maternity College of Nursing and Midwifery will be chaired by Grace Omoni.
