Kiambu governor, Kimani Wamatangi, is facing impeachment threats, with insiders privy to the developments claiming that a section of Members of the County Assembly (MCAs), demanded up to Ksh5 million each to drop the motion.
A document seen by Kenyans.co.ke, indicated that the MCAs, on Wednesday, April 26, discussed the removal of Wamatangi in the day's second session.
Earlier, on Tuesday, April 18, nearly 15 Kiambu County ward representatives (MCAs), also targeted several key figures in the administration.
In a motion filed in the house, the MCAs pushed for the ouster of County Executive Committee Member for Finance, Nancy Kiruba, accusing her of negligence.
"We had a budget of Ksh16.3 billion, out of which Ksh10 billion was to pay salaries while Ksh6.3 billion was meant for development.
"As we are standing here, Governor Wamatangi has only used Ksh600 million, which means that we will have to return over Ksh4 billion to the Treasury since the current Financial Year is ending in June 2023," an agitated MCA stated on Tuesday, April 18.
The MCAs also lamented that the Governor had failed to put his house in order, which led to the resignation of seven a number of County Executive Committee Members.
In a press conference held after presenting a letter to Wamatangi, the MCAs accused the governor of employing bureaucratic tendencies.
"We have a Governor who wants to approve everything, including when a bulb must be replaced by a junior county official," another MCA claimed.
However, in response, inside sources claimed that the 15 MCAs demanded a bribe of Ksh5 million for each one of them, failure to which they would initiate an impeachment motion against the Governor. Claims Kenyans.co.ke could not independently verify as several MCAs were unreachable.
The source also claimed that the impeachment motion tabled against CEC Finance Nancy Kiruba was a decoy to hoodwink the public as they prepared to oust the Governor.
It was noted that the Governor will continue to serve the people of Kiambu without fear or favour as obligated by the Constitution.
"The governor has clarified that elective positions are not avenues for leaders to make money. This has not sat well with some MCAs and MPs who have vowed to arm-twist the county boss, hoping he will soften.
In January 2023, Githiga Ward MCA Ruth Waithira (MCA Githiga) was also ousted as the lands, housing, physical planning, municipal administration and urban development committee chair.
Waithira was accused of extorting developers, allegations he denied. The MCAs replaced her with Wambiri of Murera ward.
Previous Kiambu governors, William Kabogo and Ferdinand Waititu, both faced impeachment threats, with the latter finally ousted on Wednesday, January 29, 2020. Waititu was accused of abuse of office and violation of the Constitution.
"Some have been demanding that he allows them to run roads projects so that they can cut deals with contractors, but he has stayed put," a source privy to the plot stated.
While addressing the matter on Wednesday, April 26, Governor Kimani Wamatangi expressed confidence that the people of Kiambu will always stand by him, and neither will he be coerced into giving in to rogue MCAs' demands.
"If they want politics, I they should know that I am a veteran in that field, and I dare them to continue in that trajectory," Wamatangi declared.
"Many of the MCAs are good. But some think they were voted in to make money. We shall remain steadfast in our role," he added while addressing residents in Kiambu in April 2023.
