Jibril Abduba, the driver of the trailer set ablaze at the Kibra section along the Southern Bypass on Tuesday, May 2,  recounted his encounter with alleged rioters.

Speaking to the media, Abduba intimated that he and other motorists had initially stopped a few kilometres from where he was attacked, but the police assured them that the road the safe.

"The officers assured us that the road was clear, but we drove straight into the chaos. They started pelting stones at vehicles.

"Those with smaller vehicles made u-turns while others sped off. I tried to turn but I could not, that was when a crowd of rowdy youths surrounded the trailer," he narrated.

Jibril claimed that the unidentified gang of youth forced entry into the driver's cabin and dragged him out of the vehicle.

As they searched the cabin for valuables, the driver escaped and watched as the gang torched the trailer from afar. However, the goons did not access the consignment in the container.

"I was ferrying electrical cables from Mombasa to Kampala, Uganda. Luckily, they failed to break the lock and access the goods," Abduba told Citizen TV.

The driver noted that a number of those who escaped in personal cars incurred heavy losses as some of the projectiles shattered their windscreens and car windows.

Police officers who spotted smoke billowing from the trailer responded swiftly and lobbed tear gas canisters to disperse the mob.

A team of firefighters was dispatched to put out the raging inferno. The incident caused a traffic snarl-up along the bypass.

Earlier, a 33-seater matatu was torched by unknown goons along Ngong Road. Preliminary reports indicate that the raging mob attacked the occupants of the matatu.

Nonetheless, Kenyans.co.ke could not independently verify that the youths in the two incidences were affiliated with the ongoing mass action protests by Azimio Chief Raila Odinga.
