Joyce Omondi Surprises Waihiga Mwaura at Citizen TV Farewell Party

Former Citizen TV anchor Waihiga Mwaura was surprised by his wife, Joyce Omondi, and colleagues, including Trevor Ombija, after hosting his last News Night Show on Tuesday, May 2.

Other staff members led by joined in, sharing fond memories of the journalist who is set to join BBC Africa.

"You are a great person and a fantastic journalist," Ombija stated as he unveiled the 'grand' surprise.

Waihiga was seemingly caught off guard by the surprise but argued that his wife was bound to celebrate him as they worked at the same media house.

"I actually had a feeling this would happen. Thank you, love," as he hugged his wife.

On her part, Omondi was elated about her husband's new role, affirming that he will excel as he has in previous roles.

"I am so proud of you and glad I can finally surprise Waihiga on air," she stated.

"I admire you as a leader, as a person, as a human being. You are incredibly talented, and so hard working I  see the hours you put in, and I just honour you for it. I thank God for opening this door for you, and I know your light will shine brighter and brighter," Omondi added.

"That is the most beautiful thing I have heard today, I have heard a lot of messages today but yours tops them all," Waihiga told his wife.

The team sang songs and shared a cake on Waihiga's final day at Royal Media Services (RMS).

Waihiga signed off while appreciating the RMS team, his family, and friends who stood by him for the 14 years he worked at Citizen TV.

"I conclude this evening by especially thanking you our viewers for your support over the years. It is because of you that we get to practice this profession and provide high-quality news that you tune into every day. With that I bid you farewell," Waihiga stated.

Besides being an anchor, Waihiga was the managing editor, Multimedia at RMS. He joined the media house as a sports anchor in 2009.

Some of his awards include BBC Komla Dumor Award 2018, CNN Multichoice Award 2012, and the inaugural Mo Amin Award.
