Nancy Onyango: Profile of IMF Director in Race for CBK Governor Post

Public Service Commission (PSC), on Wednesday, May 2, shortlisted candidates for the position of Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Governor

 Nancy Asiko Onyango, the Director of the Office of Internal Audit and Inspection at the International Monetary Fund (IMF), was among those competing for the role. 

In the IMF role she has held since 2019, Onyango oversees the IMF's internal audit and inspection function, which provides independent and objective assessments of the effectiveness of the organization's governance, risk management, and internal control processes.

"Nancy is also a Gender Leadership specialist. Her doctoral dissertation was on the 'Perceived Barriers Faced by Women in Ascending to CEO Positions in Kenyan Corporations," IMF says on its website.

Prior to joining the IMF, Onyango worked at the African Development Bank (AfDB) for over 20 years in various roles, including as Director of Internal Audit and Oversight and as Chief Risk Officer.

She also worked for the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Kenyan Ministry of Finance.

Other roles included the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Reliance Risk Advisory Solutions, a Board of Directors governance consulting entity she founded.

Nancy worked with PricewaterhouseCoopers in the UK, Europe, Asia and East Africa for over 25 years, and with EY as the Governance, Risk and Compliance Africa leader for two years.

Nancy holds a B. Comm (1st Class Honours) from the University of Nairobi, an MBA (Management Information Systems) from the University of Nairobi, Kenya and a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) from USIU- Africa.

She is also a qualified CPA, a Certified Risk and Information Systems Control (CRISC) practitioner, Certified Information Systems Auditor Certified in Corporate Governance for Enterprise IT (CGEIT) from ISACA International, and a Certified in Risk Management Assurance (CRMA) from the global Institute of Internal Auditors.

Onyango is a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and a Certified Internal Auditor (CIA). Nancy is a Kenyan-born and bread, and academic giant whose ideals seek to ensure compliance in financial management.

The Public Service Commission also stated that former Treasury Principal Secretary Kamau Thugge, Dorcas Muthoni Mutonyi, Haron Sirima, Edward Sambili, Nancy Onyango, and Adan Abdulla Mohamed has been shortlisted and lined up for interviews.

"Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed at the Public Service Commission, Commission House, Harambee Avenue, Nairobi on the date and time indicated. Candidates should be at the venue at least 15 minutes before the starting time," read part of the statement.
