Police officers in Nakuru arrested two Ugandan pastors who were on their way to Isiolo for special prayers over suspicions of leading a cult.
Confirming the arrest, Nakuru East Deputy County Commissioner Were Simiyu stated that the two were the leaders of a group of 55 Ugandans, members of the Christ Disciples Church who were earlier arrested in Nakuru.
According to Simiyu, they noticed inconsistencies in statements from the pastors, explaining that the other members of the church had stated that they were on their way to Ethiopia for special prayers.
However, the two pastors stated that they were on their way to Isiolo for a special evangelical mission.
Simiyu stated that the police were handing over the two suspects to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for further questioning.
“They have changed tune that they were headed to Isiolo and when we interrogate them we realise that they are not telling the truth.
“They stated that they were pastors of the Christ Disciples church, and when we investigate the church, we don't want what happened in Shakahola to find us unawares,” Simiyu stated.
However, members of the church maintained that they would continue with their planned prayers.
“We will continue praying and the after the evangelism we will go back,” one of the congregants stated.
Earlier on Monday, May 2, the Ugandan nationals were arrested in Nakuru County over suspected human trafficking.
Were Simiyu reported that the Ugandan foreigners did not have proper travel documents despite being on an international trip.
Simiyu narrated that police became suspicious of the group of foreigners after learning they could not express themselves clearly in Kiswahili.
The foreigners stated that they got stranded at the Nakuru bus terminus after they ran out of money.
"We were waiting for our pastor, Isaac to send us additional money to facilitate our journey to Ethiopia for evangelism under Christ Disciples Church for a week before returning to Uganda," one of the Ugandans narrated.
