Trade and Investment Cabinet Secretary Moses Kuria, on Tuesday May 9, signed a deal with the government of Indonesia for Kenya to export 700,000 heads of cattle to the country yearly.
Kuria disclosed that they agreed to hasten approval protocols that will enable the first shipment of 20,000 heads of cattle by August 2023.
This was after a meeting with officials led by the Director General of Indonesia Animal Production and Animal health Dr. Ir. Nasrullah in Jakarta.
“We discussed on the opportunity for Kenya to access the 700,000 cattle per year import market in Indonesia,” Kuria stated.
According to the CS, the move aims to open international market for pastoralists and business operators to sell livestock and livestock products in Indonesia.
“This is now an opportunity for farmers, who can now use the opportunity to sell livestock to international markets at better prices,” he explained.
Kuria added that Indonesia is a high-potential partner in Kenya's national development agenda, particularly in trade and industrialization.
The Trade CS also revealed that he had fruitful discussions on how to incorporate the private sector and the government of Indonesia in developing the blue economy and fisheries in Kenya.
He at the same time noted that Kenya will incorporate Indonesian technology in the mining sector and exploration of natural resources.
The visit to Indonesia by the Trade CS was aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and explore future trade and investment partnerships between Kenya and Indonesia in various sectors.
Kuria’s State visit follows a significant milestone in the diplomatic ties between Kenya and Indonesia, after senior Indonesian Ministers visited Kenya in January 2023.
The delegation from Indonesia was hosted by President William Ruto where they emphasized the commitment of both nations to enhance cooperation and fostering mutually beneficial relationships.
