Philip Obae, a graduate of St Paul's University, was elated after he received a letter of Acceptance to attend a global conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in January 2023. Four months later, the promise never came to be.
Speaking exclusively to Kenyans.co.ke, Obae noted that Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika had promised to pay for his ticket and accommodation during the Jamhuri Day Celebrations on December 12, 2022.
He indicated that the governor called him to the podium and pledged to honour the promise - after writing numerous letters to Kihika.
Moments after the event, Obae noted that he kept in touch with the governor's team who sought a breakdown of the costs which added up to Ksh280,000.
"After I sent the amount needed, they informed me that the governor would top up the amount to Ksh300,000," he recalled.
The letter of Acceptance, seen by Kenyans.co.ke, indicated that the conference was slated to be a four-day event from January 27, 2023, to January 30, 2023.
"Each participant will be responsible for his/her visa fee and flight ticket to and from Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. You are requested to pay your delegate fee in order to become a confirmed delegate of Best Diplomats Bangkok," read part of the statement.
Days later, Obae claimed that phone calls and texts to the governor's team went unanswered. He noted that several visits to the County government's office also bore no fruits as the governor was attending to other matters.
Fearing that the chance might slip away, Obae fortuitously tried to meet up with the governor but to no avail. He noted that days became weeks and ultimately months since his chance passed.
While detailing the events, Obae requested clarification from the governor to understand why the promise was never fulfilled.
Efforts by Kenyans.co.ke, to reach the governor were futile as calls went unanswered.
