Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko, on Friday, May 12, cleared the air on his meeting with former Citizen TV presenter Jacque Maribe, following her statement in the Monica Kimani murder probe.

In a statement, the former Nairobi Governor admitted that he met Maribe at Citizen TV studios, where he had gone for an interview on Wednesday, September 18, 2018.  Sonko admitted that their meeting happened around 9:45 pm.

The former Governor revealed that he went to the interview accompanied by several lawmakers and a couple of his friends.

"It’s true l was with Jackie Maribe at Citizen TV when I was being interviewed on the JKL show on September 19, 2018, from about 9:45 pm," Sonko's statement read in part.

After the interview on Citizen TV, Sonko revealed that he offered to take all his friends, including Maribe, to an entertainment joint.

To prove his claims, the former Governor revealed that he managed to download CCTV footage from the entertainment joint after Maribe was arrested in connection with the murder of Monica Kimani.

"Since this story was there from the day Jackie was arrested, I managed to download the CCTV from the club," he insisted.

In his statement, he denied any knowledge of Jowie Irungu, who was also arrested as a suspect in the murder of the businesswoman.

While appearing in court on Thursday, May 11, Maribe denied knowing the deceased, maintaining that he was in Sonko's company on the night Kimani was murdered.

"I left my workplace at Royal Media Services and went to a club in Westlands with Governor Sonko’s entourage. I did not even meet with Jowie who at the time was my fiancée as he only joined us later at the club and sat on a different table," Maribe stated.

In her defence, Maribe indicated that she learnt of Monica's death while reading the news on Citizen TV.

"I learnt about her death when I was reading a news bulletin. I urge this court to acquit me,” she testified.

Maribe was hosting Citizen TV Briefs at 4 pm on September 21, where she read news of Monica's death.

The court will on Friday, January 26, issue a judgement on the murder case. Irungu and Maribe may be released or be sentenced if found guilty.
