The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) on Wednesday, May 17, shared photos showing different artists plastering streets in Nakuru County with impressive grafitti.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, NTSA Head of Communication Dido Guyatu indicated that the artist painted at junctions along Kenyatta Avenue within Nakuru City.

According to NTSA, the paintings were essential as they advocated for safer and more inclusive mobility options while highlighting the benefits of walking, cycling, and using public transport.

The permanent paintings were also used to promote tourism in the county, led by Governor Susan Kihika.

According to NTSA, the road campaign coincided with Road Safety Week, organised by the United Nations.

"We have rolled out the initiative at junctions along Kenyatta Avenue within Nakuru City. The activity is part of the Usalama Barabarani campaign, and the rollout has coincided with the celebration of the 7th UN Road safety week," Guyatu told Kenyans.co.ke.

Some activities identified during the exercise included interactive sessions on selected streets to test street design proposals, street art painting, particularly on crosswalks, street furniture painting, and physical demos on using both pedestrian and cycling lanes.

To facilitate the programme, NTSA provided technical guidance to the various stakeholders, coordinated the initiative within the City, and created road safety awareness among road users.

The programme is also expected to be rolled out in other parts of the country. NTSA disclosed working with different development partners to extend the initiative to various towns.

"We will work with county governments,  stakeholders and members of the public to adopt the initiative. Pedestrians, particularly children, are the most vulnerable road users, and we must all prioritise their safety," an NTSA official added.

The initiative came after NTSA launched a countrywide campaign targeting motorists. The operation was launched following a directive from Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
