The Inspector General (IG) of Police Japhet Koome on Wednesday, May 17, announced that the service was aiming to recruit 5,000 police officers.

Appearing before National Assembly to table the 2023/2024 financial year budget, Koome revealed that the recruitment was urgent as it sought to replace officers who had left the service.

The recruitment had earlier been set to happen in April 2023, but it did not happen due to financial constraints.

The Treasury had proposed the recruitment to happen in April 2024 but the police boss vehemently disagreed.

“Myself I cannot see recruiting in 2024. How can I do that with the shortfall I have?” the IG quipped.

Koome revealed that the force was aiming to recruit within the 2022/2023 financial year and hold another recruitment in the 2023/2024 financial year.

“I cannot see. Even my eyes cannot see recruitment in 2024. I can only see 2023,” Koome told parliamentarians about the urgency of the recruitment.

During the budget presentation, the IG outlined key priority areas of the National Police Service for consideration by the Committee for Budgetary Allocation to enhance smooth operations, criminal investigations and administration within the Service.

Koome was accompanied by NPS Principle Administrative Secretary, Bernice Lemedeket, the Director – Directorate of Criminal Investigations, Mohamed Amin, and NPS Technical Committee Members.

In January 2023, over 5000 police officers were released to service after a nine-month of training at various National Police Service training colleges.

President William Ruto while welcoming the graduates to the service revealed that they were key in fostering peace among Kenyans.

"We are going to enhance our community-police partnerships to improve police effectiveness and responsiveness in addressing emerging security challenges," Ruto stated on January 10, 2023.
