The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), on Tuesday, May 23, announced that former Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was wanted for questioning.

In a statement, the police indicated that the politician was being sought after regarding two firearms and rolls of bhang allegedly recovered from a property linked to him.

The items, according to the police, were recovered during a raid conducted in Ngomongo village in Nakuru County.

Njenga was allegedly on the run, with police reaching out to the public to help trace him.

Consequently, detectives provided a hotline through which they could receive tips anonymously on the whereabouts of the Njenga.

"Detectives based in Nakuru County are looking for ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga, in relation to the recovery of two firearms and over 90 rolls of bhang, found at a home linked to him.

"Any information on the whereabouts of the ex-Mungiki leader who has since gone into hiding maybe volunteered through the #FichuakwaDCI anonymous hotline 0800 722 203," read the statement in part.

On the other hand, the police also revealed that eight suspects were placed in custody after being found at the property linked to the former Mungiki leader.

Njenga was last seen in public on Saturday, May 13, during the funeral of Mau Mau leader Dedan Kimathi's wife, Mukami Kimathi, in Njabini village, Nyandarua County.

The former Mungiki leader arrived at the event minutes after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his entourage arrived.

Notably, he attended the funeral a day after police raided his homes in Nairobi and Nyandarua counties.

At the time, he termed the raids as a political witchhunt claiming that the state wanted to prevent him from attending Mukami's funeral alongside Raila.

“They said they were looking for me. I do not know why, but I see it as politics and harassment, which should stop.

"I told the Mukami's family that we will come with Raila and I think this is the reason they are doing this,” he claimed.
