UPDATE: Police lobbed tear gas to disperse a crowd of Maina Njenga supporters who were chanting slogans outside the DCI HQ. Maina Njenga was still holed up inside the premises with detectives grilling him on firearm and bhang allegedly seized at his house.
Azimio principals led by Marth Karua, former Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa and George Wajackoyah were among the Azimio leaders who accompanied Maina Njenga to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters along Kiambu Road on Thursday, May 25.
Also present were former Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria and former Ndaragwa Member of Parliament (MP) Jeremiah Kioni.
In videos seen by Kenyans.co.ke, a crowd of supporters milled around the leaders, greeting the former Mungiki leader and his entourage when they arrived.
Njenga’s lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, walked shoulder to shoulder with his client.
Njenga and crew had to alight outside the DCI headquarters and walk in as their cars were barred from entering the premises.
Minutes after their entry, a staunch supporter of the Azimio coalition, Calvince Okoth, alias Gaucho, tried to enter the DCI but was barred from entry.
Njenga reported to the DCI offices after an order by a Nakuru court.
There were reports that Azimio leader Raila Odinga was to show up in solidarity with Njenga, a close ally.
The last time the Prime Minister Raila Odinga was at DCI was denied access when former Interior CS Fred Matiang'i was being grilled on March 7.
On Wednesday, May 24, Njenga appeared at the Nakuru Law Courts where he was ordered to appear at the DCI headquarters following an anticipatory bail application he had filed at the Nairobi High Court on May 19.
On May 12, the DCI raided three homes owned by the former sect leader based in Nairobi, Nakuru, and Laikipia counties.
The DCI noted that they recovered two firearms and 90 rolls of bhang’ in his properties.
According to documents seen by Kenyans.co.ke, the police also accused him of being a member of an organized criminal group.
Maina was the leader of the Mungiki until it was annihilated by the state and banned by the Mwai Kibaki administration, when the late John Michuki was in charge of security.
