Ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga was on Thursday, May 25, whisked away by detectives drawn from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu Road.

Speaking to the media, Maina's lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru questioned why his client spent hours at the premises and was yet to record a statement.

He added that the police did not communicate with Njenga's legal team and drove him away to an unknown destination.

The lawyer suspected that the DCI detectives had taken him to Kiambu as he instructed his driver to trail the motorcade that had left minutes earlier.

"They have seized my client. We don't know where he has gone. We have been sitting there all day they did not speak to us. Also, he has not recorded any statement thus far.

"Right now we're heading to Kiambu as we suspect they have headed there," he stated.

In a video seen by Kenyans.co.ke, a trail of Subaru cars sped off from the DCI headquarters to an unknown location leaving behind a crowd of supporters who had thronged the premises.

At the same time, more police officers were dispatched to the area to disperse the followers who sought to enter the DCI headquarters.

Reports indicated that a section of Kiambu Road, which connects to the busy Thika Superhighway had been closed.

The former Mungiki leader was accompanied by Azimio principals including Marth Karua (NARC-Kenya), Eugene Wamalwa (DAP-K) and George Wajackoyah (Roots Party) to the headquarters after a court order issued on Wednesday, May 24.

Minutes after their entry, supporters milled around the entrance of the headquarters but were denied access. This led to chaos as police officers engaged the supporters who were chanting slogans in solidarity with Njenga. The officers lobbed tear gas canisters at the crowd to disperse them from the location.

Detectives were grilling Njenga after they seized two guns and rolls of bhang at his home.
