The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), on Tuesday, June 6, addressed concerns raised by motorists who complained about receiving messages on the erroneous expiry of their driving licenses.

In a statement, the Authority urged the concerned motorists to send their details to be updated in its registry.

Further, the drivers were advised to check the validity status of their driving licenses through the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) code.

A section of motorists had lamented that they renewed their driving license for the annual package but received expiry messages instead.

"I renewed my DL early this year for the annual package only to get this message from you guys on June 5, 2023. What's not happening?" one motorist wondered.

The message, seen by Kenyans.co.ke, read: NTSA notes your driving license has expired. In line with the requirements of the Traffic Act, you are hereby required to log in to your account via www.ntsa.go.ke and renew the license.

How to Verify DL Validity Status

Motorists are required to log in through NTSA's citizen self-service portal: tims.ntsa.go.ke/login.

Click on the verification tab and place your Identification number.

Full details will be displayed on the screen.

Further, motorists can verify their details through a short message code by sending their national ID number to 25400.

NTSA will then send a message confirming the motorist's driving license details.

In April 2018, NTSA launched the smart driving license, which contains motorists' information that is readable through unique electronic gadgets.

This is enabled through a smart chip that holds the drivers' information and a points-based system that encourages adherence to traffic laws.

In particular, each card comes with 100 points deducted every time the owner commits a traffic offence. The license is, however, automatically cancelled once a driver reaches the threshold of 40 points.
