A director from Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS), on Wednesday, June 7, indicated that some candidates were likely to miss university slots for failing to submit their applications.

Speaking to Kenyans.co.ke, KUCCPS' director of Placement Coordination and Career Development John Olouch announced that several candidates were missing the final crucial step in the application process by leaving courses in the basket within the portal.

The director indicated that the affected individuals failed to read instructions carefully.

When the application window closes, the system will indicate that the crop of applicants with choices still in the basket did not make any applications.

How Basket Works

According to the director, a basket functions similarly to a shopping trolley in the supermarket, where applicants pick different courses from a larger pool of courses listed on KUCCPS online portal.

From that basket, they are expected to pick as many courses as they want randomly. Then later, the applicants can narrow down their choices before submitting the application.

Olouch, the former Rongo University lecturer, however, observed that some applicants left the courses in the basket without submitting them.

"When they go through the portal, they can select the courses from the over 100 courses in all institutions. They pick them up and temporarily store them in the basket. They can store more than they are required to select in the basket," he stated.

"When they return, they have isolated the courses and are working with a shorter list. Some of the students may not have read and understood that, or they think they have submitted their applications by leaving the courses in the basket.

"That is like going to the supermarket and picking items and then placing them in a trolley. That does not mean one has to buy all the items in the trolley. One can select and return others," he insisted.

Deadline for submitting university or college placement choices was set for Wednesday, June 7,

While opening the portal on Wednesday, May 17, Education Cabinet Secretary stated that courses in public universities would only be eligible for both government scholarships and loans, while those selected in private universities would be eligible for government loans.
