According to the Ministry of Tourism, Kenyans accounted for 1,660,169 out of 2,179,125 tourists who visited various vacation spots in the country in 2022, almost double the numbers recorded in 2021.
While this signalled a rising popularity in domestic tourism, it was also an index that more Kenyans were enthusiastic about vacationing.
Speaking to a leading tour company, a representative told Kenyans.co.ke that Kenyans seeking holiday abroad increased with the same ratio.
“Kenyans are increasingly seeking a vacation abroad, among the most frequented spots in the world are; Dubai, Mauritius, Zanzibar and Thailand,” she told Kenyans.co.ke.
It should be noted that the quoted average prices are for those willing to travel with a tour company and unless quoted otherwise, include return economy flights. The costs could change periodically according to the dollar exchange rate.
Dubai
The tour company noted that Dubai is the most beloved spot for tourists from Kenya. For a 5-day holiday, a Kenyan will pay an average of Ksh75,000 in a 3 or 4-star hotel.
“This amount is usually charged during low season largely between April and September,” she explained.
According to the travel agent, the Ksh75,000 will get you; night accommodation, daily buffet breakfast and a desert safari with live barbeque dinner.
Zanzibar
According to the tour company, Zanzibar is the second most beloved spot for Kenyans vacationing abroad.
“Many tourists prefer Zanzibar because it is near and also has an almost similar climate to that of Kenya,” the travel company explained.
In the offseason, an average 5-day trip to Zanzibar will cost Ksh142,000 catering only for accommodation and breakfast.
Mauritius
Mauritius offers almost similar tourist scenery to Kenya and Zanzibar. Attractions include; beaches, lagoons, reefs and national parks.
Mauritius is gaining popularity due its cheap rates. A 5-day trip costs an average of Ksh170,000, including an English-speaking guide and emergency assistance.
Bangkok, Thailand
Many Kenyans are increasingly seeking to travel to one of the most visited cities in the world, Bangkok.
“Thailand is becoming a major tourist attraction spot for Kenya majorly due to intensive marketing,” the tour company explained.
“The place is also relatively cheap. With Ksh310,000 you can have a magical 8-day trip in Bangkok,” the representative added.
Some perks that come with the package are; transportation using coaches, a coral island tour using private speed boat and an international buffet.
