Olive Everett-Kelwa, a student from Tiverton High School in England, is set to embark on a 1,014-Kilometre (630 miles) walk to raise funds to support Kenyans living in extreme poverty.
As per Devon News, an England-based publisher, the student, along with her classmates, is scheduled to embark on a journey to Kenya in July 2024. Their purpose is to help Nakuru residents living in extreme poverty.
Kelway will commence her trek along the South West Coast Path in England. With the aim of covering over 1,000 kilometers before the end of the year.
Additionally, Kelway mentioned that she and her schoolmates will be actively volunteering with local communities and schools in Nakuru as part of the African Adventures Foundation. Their collective efforts will involve preparing and serving food for the communities, enabling them to make a meaningful impact during their stay.
Furthermore, the students will actively participate in various tasks within the schools, including providing assistance in classrooms and engaging in maintenance and improvement work on the school buildings
Kelway also noted that her team will visit families that live on the Hilton dumpsite in Nakuru and distribute aid packages and donations.
“The students will be volunteering in local community schooling projects, with the goal of providing an education and a future for children living in extreme poverty in the area.
The teenager, who is in Year 9, stated that her inspiration came from thinking about all the families in Kenya who don't have shelter and food.
“In the summer of 2024, I will be travelling to Kenya with Tiverton High School students. We will be helping to turn an abandoned building into a school so that the children in Kenya can be educated.
“Picture this. You and your family live in a shack on a dump site with no beds, no electricity, no nothing. Just each other. This is not you, but it is someone. Many people actually. They can't do anything about it, but I can. We can," she noted.
She added that despite the big challenge ahead of her, she was ready to put in the work throughout the rest of the year to ensure that the trip is a success.
"This is an absolute monster of a challenge which is going to require a great deal of time as well as energy. For that reason, it is a challenge that will be chipped away at in sections throughout 2023. We are aiming to try and complete the distance before the year is out," Kelway emphatically stated.
