Moja Expressway Company on Monday, June 26, announced a 16-hour temporary closure on its 27-kilometre Nairobi Expressway beginning Saturday night.
In a statement, the company noted that the elevated highway will be closed beginning Saturday, July 1, at 10:00 pm till Sunday, July 2, at 4:00 pm.
Motorists and other commuters planning to use the expressway were advised to plan their journeys accordingly to avoid inconvenience.
“The expressway will be closed to make way for the Nairobi City Marathon,” Moja Company explained.
According to data from Moja Expressway Company, over 50,000 vehicles use the road on a daily basis meaning that the closure will affect thousands of Kenyans.
Nairobi City Marathon
Marathoners will run on the 27-kilometre stretch in an event organised by the Ministry of Sports in partnership with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) among other sponsors.
“It is another chance to experience our great city as you run on the magnificent Nairobi Expressway,” the event sponsors touted the event.
The city marathon accords Kenyans a chance to run alongside celebrated pro athletes.
A complete marathon covers 42 kilometres necessitating Moja Expressway to shut down the entire highway running from Westlands in Nairobi County to Mlolongo in Machakos County.
The event will be flagged off at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday at 9:30 am with all participants expected to register at the same venue.
Alternative Routes
Motorists who had planned to use the road during the marathon have the alternative of using the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway as well as Uhuru Highway and Waiyaki Way.
