National Assembly Deputy Speaker, Gladys Boss on Monday, June 26, questioned United Democratic Alliance (UDA) Secretary-General Cleophas Malala's motives in running the affairs of the ruling party.
In a media interview, Boss poked holes into Malala's leadership tactics - indicating that the UDA membership has been marred with chaos since he assumed the role.
The Uasin Gishu Woman Representative insisted that the ruling party was founded on peace and development and was not driven by pandemonium and disarray.
"My personal opinion as a UDA member is that I am disappointed with the performance of Cleophas Malala. He has been going on the UDA membership drive and many have been violent. I enquired from some of the UDA members and since we started the party, we recruited people in a record under a year. At that time, there was not a single UDA meeting that was violent.
"The other day he was in Marsabit, there was violence. He went to Isiolo, there was violence. He went to Mombasa and there was violence. I think I am going to talk to UDA members as we begin to ask ourselves whether this person is trying to destroy our party," she lamented.
Malala has been on a nationwide charm offensive to establish the dominance of the ruling party across the country.
The aim, according to the SG, is to bring more members on board ahead of the party polls slated for August 2023.
“I received new members into the ruling party led by Former Kajiado Governor, David Ole Nkedienye. Our pursuit remains painting Kenya Yellow, and the Azimio leadership should stop giving President William Ruto ultimatums,” Malala stated on June 6, 2023.
Some of the recruitment drives have, however, ended in chaos - forcing Malala to end the drives across various counties.
On Saturday, June 24, the membership drive in Mombasa was cancelled after supporters of Nyali MP Mohammed Ali and East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP Hassan Omar clashed.
While addressing the media after the chaos, Malala assured the party members that necessary steps would be taken to summon leaders who propagated violence.
A day later, UDA postponed an event in Homa Bay after reports emerged that Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga was scheduled to tour the region at the stipulated time.
A highly placed source confirmed to Kenyans.co.ke that UDA could not risk a clash between supporters of both parties which would result in chaos.
