Retired Judge and Kilifi Senator Stewart Madzayo sought an explanation on why action was yet to be taken against police officers recorded on camera attacking journalists during the March 30 protests.
Madzayo submitted his petition before the Standing Committee on National Security, Security and International Relations on Tuesday, June 27.
He asked the committee to explain to the Senate, with reason, why police continued to use force against journalists in the country and the steps taken to ensure that such incidents did not re-occur.
“He is seeking a statement regarding the actions of police officers who used force against journalists during the Azimio coalition demonstrations.
“Senator Madzayo has asked the committee to inform the Senate of the reasons for the police using force to disperse journalists who were filming Azimio's protest in Pipeline Estate, Nairobi County,” a statement from the committee read in part.
Madzayo highlighted a case where a police officer was caught on camera lobbing three teargas canisters inside the vehicle of NTV journalists who were covering the demonstrations.
The Senate Minority Leader also demanded that the committee gives a report on any action taken against the officer stating that many of the reporters were bruised and injured as a result.
“He also wants the Committee to inform Parliament through its report on strategies developed by the government to ensure journalists conduct their professional activities freely in accordance with the law without being interrupted by police officers,” added the statement.
NTV cameraman Erick Isinta, who was part of the crew in the vehicle, recounted the events stating that the first canister hit him on the face while the second landed inside the jacket he was wearing.
He revealed that as he sought relief from the choking tear gas fumes, the officer hit his face with another canister which led to the deformation of his right eye and cheeks.
During the protests, other journalists, including KTN News cameraman Tomon Abuna, were injured. Media companies' property was also damaged.
The attack on the journalists sparked outrage among Kenyans, who demanded the arrest of the rogue officer seen on the video.
