Former Police Spokesperson Charles Owino on Thursday, July 20 confirmed his appointment as the coordinator of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party in Siaya County.
Speaking during Citizen TV's Day Break show, Owino expressed that he will be tasked with popularising the ruling party in former Prime Minister Raila Odinga's backyard.
The politician who contested for the Siaya deputy gubernatorial seat under the United Democratic Movement (UDM) made the confirmation after speculation over his new role in President William Ruto's party.
"Yes, it is true that I have been appointed. We are pushing Siaya to a multi-party democracy so that we can stop having a single party," he stated.
In a separate statement, UDA Secreatry General Cleophas Malala indicated that the new appointment would revamp their drive to expand their party in all regions of the country.
“This change is informed by the need to enhance efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of Party programmes and activities within the county.
“Equally. Collins Olemo has been assigned to assist Owino in the ongoing party membership recruitment exercise. All party members are requested to grant the duo the necessary support and cooperation.” Malala stated.
According to the UDA party constitution, the coordinators are also tasked with helping in the organising of the party programmes in the county.
They are also tasked with overseeing the implementation of national programmes and monitoring their impacts.
Prior to his movement to UDA and subsequent appointment, Owino was a member of UDM and was running mate for former Rarieda MP Nicholas Gumbo in the 2022 polls.
At the time, UDM was a constituent party of the Azimio la Umoja coalition under Raila and former President Uhuru Kenyatta.
The party later decamped to Kenya Kwanza after Ruto won the elections.
