Cabinet Secretary of Information Eliud Owalo has confirmed that there were hacking attempts on major digital infrastructure but the government has since restored all the systems including e-Citizen which houses over 5,000 services.
Speaking during the launch of a free Wi-Fi service in Homa Bay, Owalo explained that the hackers did not access any information from the platforms, contrary to reports that the group had stolen the personal data of Kenyans.
Sudan Anonymous, which claimed responsibility for the attacks, claimed that they managed to access the personal data of Kenyans during the four-day hacking spree.
E-Citizen contains personal information including addresses, ID numbers, date of birth, occupation and biometric details of millions of Kenyans.
The attacks were the biggest in Kenya's history, though there are other data breaches that the country witnessed early this year, mostly targeting State websites and parastatals.
The country loses billions annually to harking and other cyber crimes, which is one of the highest in the region.
As Kenya's digital systems expand, so are the threats that the country faces.
The cyber attacks early in the week made it hard for Kenyans to apply for driving licenses, birth certificates, passports and company registrations among other services.
Foreigners were unable to apply for e-visa, as most were advised to just travel and process the key document at points of entry.
The attacks have raised questions over the country's preparedness to counter cyberattacks, especially State infrastructure.
While private companies attacked responded well and managed to keep the criminals at bay, the government was caught off-guard and struggled to respond on time.
Consequently, the country was treated with intermittent services, disrupting processing of key documents, some already facing months backlogs.
