A youth from Nyamira County bagged a job directly from Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu on Monday after rushing to the stage and making a heartfelt plea, which led to the opportunity.

Machogu was addressing mourners who gathered to pay their last respects to the late Nyamaiya Ward Member of County Assembly (MCA) Elijah Osiemo when the incident happened.

The CS, who was on the podium at the time the incident happened, was about to award a teaching job to a member of Osiemo's family.

"You can see he is signing (the teaching application form) now. If there is a neighbour here who wants a teaching (job), this one is filling a form and will be a teacher," announced Machogu.

His speech was, however, interrupted by a slight commotion caused by the youth who was rushing to the stage after bypassing several guards.

The unidentified man knelt before the CS and begged to be employed by the Teaching Service Commission (TSC).

Machogu handed him three forms as the crowd cheered before turning to the crowd and playfully asking them, "Hasn't the youth fought for himself in a good way?" That signified that he had bagged the job.

The youth's employment occurred amid the Commission's promotion of 14,000 teachers, which has also encompassed recruitment of principals and their deputies.

As of March 2023, a total of 346,760 tutors were under the TSC payroll with plans in high gear to employ an additional 110,000.

On Monday last week, TSC opened up 18,000 vacancies in Junior Secondary School centers across the country. Nakuru accounted for the highest number at 698 followed by Machakos (655), Murang'a (635) and Narok (618).

Nyamira Funeral

Scores joined Machogu during the burial ceremony of the late Osiemo, who doubled as Nyamira County's majority leader, in Nyamira County.

Osiemo passed away in a road crash at Mai Mahiu Escarpment along Mai Mahiu-Naivasha Highway a fortnight ago.

The accident involved his vehicle, which was headed to Nairobi, and a motorcycle. The rider sustained injuries on his legs.
