Police and roommates of the deceased Rwandese athlete, Rubayita Siragi, who was allegedly murdered in Iten on Thursday last week have revealed a love triangle involving a Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) student.
Speaking to the press on Monday, Keiyo North OCPD Tom Makori noted that investigators believe that a suspect who is behind bars committed the heinous act after the KMTC student and the deceased rekindled their love.
Police reports show the deceased and the lady split last year. The lady then, in December 2022, started a relationship with the man accused of the murder.
"The suspect, who beat up the athlete, had entered into a relationship with the girl. It was suspected that the suspect was the girl's boyfriend from December (2022) but the KMTC student was reconnecting with the Rwandese," stated Makori.
His roommates have refuted police claims that the couple split and that the lady entered another relationship.
One of the friends noted that love between the duo was intense and denied claims that the two had separated at some point before rekindling their love.
"We left them (at the hostels) on some days because we trusted him and we thought they would get married. I know they had not separated because we would have known," one of the two roommates, Noel Hitimana, stated.
He added that they dated for more than two years.
According to reports, the body of the deceased was found along a road in Iten and its is believed that the upcoming athlete had been assaulted.
"We saw his body. He had been hit and blood was oozing from his left and right ears," corroborated the other roommate.
Siragi had been training at the camp since 2017 and according to his friends, he had already packed his bags to visit his mother country when the incident occurred.
Earlier, a coach who resided at the camp reported that the two, Siragi and the suspect, had engaged in a fistfight before his body was found by the roadside.
"We got a report that one of the athletes training in their camp fought with the barber. When he was beat up he was taken to hospital and because he had serious injuries he went to ICU but unfortunately he passed on today," Makori stated on Sunday.
Police launched investigations into the matter while the body of the deceased was transferred to Iten referral hospital's mortuary.
