The Kenyan online sphere witnessed a dramatic exchange on Thursday as former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, clashed with ex-presidential candidate Ekuru Aukot over the 2022 polls .

Chebukati's exchange with Aukot was triggered after the former IEBC Chairperson shared a video depicting the systems used in the 2022 general elections before maintaining the stance that the election process was free and fair.

To back up his point, Chebukati reminded Kenyans that 99 per cent of the election results were posted on the tallying portal just hours after polling stations were closed.

"In August 2022, Kenya held the freest, fairest and most credible election in its history. I recently presented a paper titled Role of Technology in Improving the Integrity of the Electoral Process in Kenya," Chebukati stated.

However, his sentiments did not sit well with Aukot who castigated him and accused him of bungling the nomination process of candidates across various parties.

The Thirdway Alliance Party leader claimed that Chebukati will go down in history as the worst election boss in the country.

"You're fake. The nomination process was choreographed. You couldn't understand basic constitutional provisions. You were biased to most of the candidates," the former presidential candidate responded.

Aukot statement's did not sit well with the former IEBC chairperson who fired right back.

"You did not meet the requirements to stand as a presidential candidate in 2022. Period," the former IEBC boss affirmed.

Aukot was disqualified from running in the 2022 polls after failing to provide signatures and copies of sufficient ID cards as required by the constitution.

Notably, the tiff between the two also drew the attention of other Kenyans who waded in and expressed their views.

The section of Kenyans who defended Chebukati cited instances where the diplomatic community praised Kenya and the IEBC for overseeing the elections which saw President William Ruto emerge as the winner against his arch-rival Raila Odinga.
