Kuria West MP Mathias Robi has implored both Kenya Police and their counterparts in Tanzania to return motorcycles detained by respective governments.
Addressing his supporters within the Constituency on Saturday, the lawmaker, who is attached to United Democratic Alliance (UDA), indicated that the detention affected hundreds of boda boda riders who relied on the two-wheelers for their daily bread.
He argued that in cases where no active cases were lodged in courts, the police should ask their owners to pick them and resume their works.
"On Friday, I was in Musoma (a Tanzanian town) and I met the head of police in Tanzania and I told her to take care of individuals even in Isebania. OCPD (Kenyan), all the motorbikes here belonging to Tanzanians that have no ongoing case should be returned," stated the MP.
"I told the police in Tanzania that all the motorbikes filling their police stations should be released back to Kenya."
The MP further asked the two governments to lessen laws allowing cross-border trade between citizens living along the strip.
He argued that Tanzanians should be allowed to get goods from Migori while Kenyans should be given lee way of purchasing cheaper products from Tanzania, albeit in small amounts.
"A mother who buys a sack of Rice from Tanzania should be allowed to resell the product in Kenya tax free. The tax should only be implemented on more than two sacks purchased in one go," he added.
According to the East African Community laws, individuals living across the border are only allowed 15 kilometers into the foreign territory. The law affects both the Tanzanian and Ugandan borders.
The allowance is aimed to foster cultural and family relations as well as boost trade and facilitate their free movement within the border villages.
In comparison, food and clothing products are generally cheaper in Tanzania as well as Uganda compared to Kenya while in terms of mobile phones and airtime charges, Kenya is generally cheaper.
Also, security in the two neighbouring countries is considered safer than Kenya which has received attacks from al Shabaab militia over recent years.
The Kenyan and Tanzania governments, however, continue to enjoy good relationship.
