Renowned freedom fighter Field Marshall Muthoni wa Kirima is dead.

Her death was announced on Tuesday, September 5, by Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, who mourned her as a gallant pre-independence fighter.

In a condolence message that was published on his X, formerly Twitter account, Gachagua added that Kirima was a gallant warrior who expressed her admiration of the country even after Kenya attained independence.

"I have woken up to sad news of the passing on of Field Marshall Muthoni Kirima, the gallant freedom fighter who fought side by side with Field Marshall Dedan Kimathi Wachiuri in the Mt. Kenya and Aberdare forests to drive colonialists from our land.

"I join her family and descendants of the Mau Mau War of Liberation in mourning the loss of our Mother Field Marshall Muthoni wa Kirima," Gachagua eulogised.

The Deputy President noted that the country remains indebted to the great heroes and heroines for their sacrifices to liberate Kenya.

"We recall with pride and sheer admiration, her exploits in leading the land and freedom army after the capture of freedom hero Dedan Kimathi whom she served as his personal assistant, after he was betrayed by Collaborators.

"May God Rest Her in Eternal peace and give strength to her family to bear the loss," the Deputy President consoled.

Kirima, in April this year, allowed former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta to shave her dreadlocks after donning them for over 70 years.

She explained that the gesture was informed by Kenya finally gaining full independence.

"I had to cut it because it has been a long journey. I started keeping this hair in 1952, and after more than 70 years, I needed to get rid of them. I now feel like a young girl," Muthoni stated after Mama Ngina cleared her pending bank loan amounting to Ksh4.7 million and bought her a home in Nyeri.

The death of Kirima is the third demise of a renowned freedom fighter, following the passing of Mukami Kimathi, the widow of freedom fighter, Field Marshal Dedan Kimathi on May 5.

Mukami passed on at the age of 101-year-old while receiving treatment at a hospital in Nairobi.

On August 18, freedom fighter Brigadier John Kiboko also passed away while receiving medical attention in Nairobi.

Kiboko was buried at his Ngorika home in Olkalou, Murugi. A number of national leaders, including Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Azimio party leader Raila Odinga attended the burial.
