On Tuesday, Andrew Mukite Musangi faced his last hurdle to becoming the next Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) chair, making him one of the most powerful men in the country's financial sector.

President William Ruto nominated the lawyer, who is also the son-in-law of the late billionaire Chris Kirubi, as the Chair of the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) Board of Directors in mid-August.

While appearing before the Parliamentary Finance Committee, the nominee estimated his wealth in the Ksh1.2 billion range, a majority of which was realised in real estate, the stock exchange, and bond trading.

A look into his career, however, Musangi cuts a powerful figure having held stints in numerous sectors including legal, business as well as in government.

Musangi served as the chairman of the powerful Jubilee National Executive Board.

He was instrumental in the 2017 Jubilee party nominations - including handing the presidential nomination ticket to President Uhuru Kenyatta.

During his appearance before the board, however, Musangi insisted that he parted ways with the former ruling party early on and never played a critical role during the 2022 General Election in which Ruto emerged as the victor.

During his career, Musangi served as the chair of the powerful Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) whose roles included monitoring, assessing, and reviewing the public procurement and asset disposal system.

He held other powerful positions simultaneously including a board seat at the Resolution Health East Africa Ltd.

According to Bloomberg, Musangi served as the chairman of the board of trustees, GenAfrica Asset Managers, a company that deals with asset management offering investment opportunities without exposing clients to unnecessary risk.

To maneuver the demanding industries, he runs his own law firm - Mukite Musangi and Company Advocates. His area of specialisation includes Dispute Resolution, Banking and Finance Law, Conveyancing and Real Estate, Corporate and Commercial Law, Intellectual Property, Debt Recovery, Receivership, Bankruptcy, Insolvency, Employment, and Tax.

Married to Kirubi's daughter Ann Musangi, Mukite is the son of the late educationist Prof Richard Musangi, who served as the Chancellor of Egerton University.

He holds his Law Degree from the University of Hull (UK) in 1993 and was admitted to the Bar in 1995.
