High Court in Machakos on September 29 dismissed the decision by the Senate to suspend nominated Senator Gloria Orwoba for 6 months.

According to the court statement, the suspension was temporarily suspended pending a hearing and determination of the application. The case will be mentioned on October 25.

The Senator last week moved to court to stop her suspension arguing that the process was unfair, unjust, and unprocedural.

The Committee on Powers and Privileges recommended her suspension over claims that a clerk at the Senate sexually assaulted her.

While noting the gravity of the charges against her, the Powers and Privileges Committee recommended that Orwoba be suspended from the House for the remainder of the second session of the 13th Parliament.

The committee also recommended that the senator be denied access to the precincts of Parliament during the period during which she will not access perks as well.

Legislators also faulted Orwoba for failing to appear before the committee to defend herself against charges.

Prior to the suspension, the senator had been summoned for grilling by the committee where she was expected to substantiate her claims detailing how she was sexually harassed by a clerk at the chambers.

Senators had initially demanded a formal apology before she was allowed back in Parliament.

The claims started in May 2023, after Orwoba raised concerns over favouritism and sexual harassment from a powerful and influential office in the Senate.
