Council of Legal Education (CLE) acting CEO Mary Mugure has stepped down, two days after the staff went on strike over the mismanagement of funds by the top leadership.
The staff went on strike on Wednesday, citing questionable expenses by the management in running the running the day-to-day activities.
The staff also accused the leadership of leaking examination papers to some candidates. This raised questions about the integrity of the body in running the examination process.
Mugure, who had been in an acting capacity for over six months, quit the position to pave the way for investigations into the matter.
CLE is an independent body that was established in 1995 to organise and conduct courses for the development of legal professionals.
The council runs the Kenya School of Law which subsequently offers practical training in law for the professional development of lawyers and other professions in the legal sector.
Following the strike on Wednesday, board chairperson Githu Muigai promised that the matter would be investigated to verify whether funds were misappropriated by the management.
He added that appropriate action would be taken if the allegations were verified.
A section of the staff had accused Mugure of trying to force herself into the position after staying in an acting capacity for six months.
They wondered whether the criteria for selecting the CEO had been followed and whether they had been sidelined for the role.
