Former Nairobi Governor, Mike Sonko, on Saturday morning, disclosed that he accommodated wanted fake lawyer Brian Mwenda at his Mombasa offices amid a manhunt launched by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
Sonko further promised to drive the suspect to DCI headquarters along Kiambu Road to record a statement.
In a video shared on his social media pages on October 14, 2023, the former Nairobi governor can be seen posing next to Mwenda, encouraging the latter to clarify his whereabouts.
“We are going to bail this guy out. DCI we are going to produce this guy to your offices, probably on Monday or Tuesday for him to record a statement,” Mike Sonko stated.
“If there are any charges to be filed against him, that's okay as he is ready to be arraigned in court,” Sonko further divulged, adding that Mwenda was ready to face the authority at whatever cost.
Conversely, the accused stated that he was ready to prove his innocence.
"I am ready to provide the actual context of what is really happening because it should be inconceivable to anyone with a brain that I have all this prowess,” the accused claimed in the video shared by Sonko.
In solidarity with Mwenda, the former governor urged his friends and renowned lawyers to join his course and argue any case that will be presented in court.
“You are in safe hands, don't worry kijana, we will present you to the DCI," Sonko assured him. "I have checked his identity card and he is a young boy," he added.
Brian Mwenda was accused of posing as a Nairobi-based lawyer after stealing the identity of a certified attorney. The Law Society of Kenya which flagged his credentials further alleged that he defrauded unsuspecting clients and tarnished the association's reputation.
LSK invited DCI to trace and arrest the accused who was found to have practised law without a license. Reports alleged that Mwenda was a student at Chuka University practicing criminology.
