The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), on Wednesday, issued a directive on the collection of the new generation number plates.

In a statement, motorists whose number plates were ready were directed to pick them up from centres they selected as collection points during the application process.

NTSA contacted the motorists via SMS, urging them to collect their plates.

"We humbly request motor vehicle owners who have received SMS notifications on collection of reflective number plates to visit the centres they identified during the application process," read the statement in part.

The service update by the agency comes days after it expedited the production and release of the number plates in line with Transport CS Kipchumba Murkomen's orders.

During his impromptu visit to NTSA offices on September 22,  the CS directed the authority to ease the application and collection process of plates.

His directive was a response to motorists who complained that they were forced to travel to NSA headquarters to pick up the items.

"I spoke to Maurice, a customer based in Mombasa, who has been waiting for his digital number plate for a while now. Despite the number plate being ready for collection and a notification sent to him from NTSA-Nairobi confirming the same, unnecessary bureaucratic processes and red tapes have led to delays," Murkomen directed then.

"I have given NTSA two weeks to clear this backlog, notify Kenyans of their nearest collection points, and put in place the necessary mechanisms to speed up the turnaround time for processing and issuance of DLs, logbooks and digital number plates," he added.

On the other hand, the authority also extended working hours to allow Kenyans to access key services.

Currently, all NTSA Banking Halls and Offices operate from Monday to Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
